What is Public Relations and How it Works

If you tell someone that you are studying Public Relations (PR) or that you are PR practitioner, you may struggle to explain what PR is and that has nothing to do with advertising as people usually thought.  ‘Advertising is what you pay for, and PR is what you pray for’.

There are a lot of definitions what PR is. Here are a few:

“Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” – Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)

“Using the news or business press to carry positive stories about your company or your products; cultivating a good relationship with local press representatives.” – Entrepreneur Staff, Entrepreneur: Small Business Encyclopedia

Public relations is the strategic management of relationships between an organization and its diverse publics, through the use of communication, to achieve understanding, realize organizational goals, and serve the public interest. “(Flynn, Gregory & Valin, 2008)

You may create your own definition of PR as soon as you get involved in this business

‘Whatever you do or say it’s a PR’.

Bill Gates ones said: ‘If I was down to my last dollar, I would spend it on PR’

PR is such a term that encompasses many different disciplines and sectors – corporate communications, consumer PR, Corporate Social Responsibility, digital PR, media relations, internal communication, crisis management, public affairs…There are two distinct areas of PR in which to work – in house for an organization or at an agency.
