While studying Public Relations we are learning to be organized, to work under high pressure situation, to be able to multi-task efficiently and to have interpersonal communication skills. Here are a few skills you should pay attention to improve while studying:
1. Passion for writing
Many times in this profession you will have to show your writing skills. Agencies will expect from you to easily change the tone & voice of your work to match the brand of the client or company that you are writing for. You will need to know how to write recognizable press releases, texts for social media platforms and reasonable e-mails for clients.
2. Researh
Sometimes, you will have to dig all night to find information you are looking for. You will have to be creative and persistent and compare and contrast reputation management softwares. My advice is to state the problem first and include the types of research you would like to conduct including reading, surveys, gathering statistics or working with specialists.
3. Graphic Design
Knowing how to edit your images for social media or web page will help you a lot in this profession. It should be a given that photography and graphic design go hand in hand. Great graphic design allows you to make a positive first impression on those looking on. Professionally designed graphics will cause other persons to form positive opinions about your product, service or brand. By nature, people like to associate with things that look good and make them feel good.
4. Photography
Without a great image, there is no story. PR needs photography to thrive especially on social media, and even through press kits. Public Relation Photography is at the heart of shaping and maintaining a positive public image of your company is an essential part of its success. The public, or anyone that will form an opinion about your company, needs to be constantly communicated to through social media platforms or the press. 5. Presentation skills
How will you send your message across? Presenting information clearly and effectively is a key skill in getting your message across. Today, presentation skills are required in almost every field, especially in Public Relations. Gaining presentation practice is key, as you’re going to passionately outline and explain your creative ideas to your clients, media buyers, and journalists who expect a professional and insightful delivery of information.
